What is rapid cycling in regards to bipolar disorder?

Rapid cycling bipolar will usually mean at least 3 or4 switches in a year. There is however a possibility of ultra rapid cycling or even a mixed episode of both together that will give the appearance of more than that in a year. No they are not normally in hours or minutes unless we are talking about a switch right at that time.
